Agriculture contributes 21-37% to global greenhouse gas emissions, yet receives only 8% of climate mitigation philanthropy. Some historically neglected GHG mitigation opportunities within the food sector demonstrate some of the most cost-effective mitigation opportunities for philanthropists focused on climate impact.
Based on major climate, health, and other intergovernmental institutions' calls for protein diversification to address climate change, this philanthropic portfolio focuses on two intertwined theories of change and the most promising interventions we expect to mitigate GHGs:
Success indicators to track progress can include alternative protein market share, livestock production data, institutional commitments to protein diversification, and more. We recommend that funders carefully consider challenges, like the small animal replacement problem, existing barriers to alternative proteins, and more.
Following desk research and expert consultation, Farmed Animal Funders assembled a a portfolio of funding recommendations for philanthropists aiming to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions within the food system. Across all organizations, we estimate that these interventions could effectively absorb $30 million in the next year, with room to scale in the future. Customized philanthropic portfolios are available pro bono to qualified funders.
To protect organizational strategies, we don’t publish the comprehensive recommendation list nor the comprehensive intervention analyses. However, we invite major philanthropists (with the potential to scale to $100,ooo or more in annual philanthropy to protein diversification) to reach out to Farmed Animal Funders to access the full portfolio.
